The two gates are set back ten inches from the fixed fence panels at either side. We designed it in this manner so as to separate and accentuate where the entry points are. All the sheet metal was hand folded, using a vise and a hammer. Then it was individually welded together at many different angles, creating an extremely sculptural surface. The lower section has different sizes of mining screen that connect the two portals at either end. The ceramic tile was all hand made for this project. The rich, earthy tones of brown, shot thru with electric sky blue, and almost white highlights of the glaze, enhance the aesthetics of the surrounding metal.
We wanted to make a gate that would harmonize with the desert surroundings of our work space. It is very “Western”, as well as being unique and modern at the same time. Functionality and beauty were important and necessary factors in designing this piece. Among other things, it has huge hinges that enable it to open effortlessly, in spite of its massive weight. We’ve also included portals on each side, as doorways for the wildlife that lives on the property (Alvin the cat).
